Expected to go up for reauthorization later this year, the No Child Left Behind law has had its fair share of criticism. But many are wondering, what will the new NCLB look like? Will it get a full makeover, complete with nips and tucks, or will it receive the airbrushed treatment, where it looks a bit different but is still pretty much the same? It’s a little early to tell, but Education Secretary Arne Duncan seems to have a plan in mind. Duncan will be visiting 15 states to hear from teachers, students and parents their position on NCLB—if they like it, hate it, etc.
Duncan said he wants meaningful change to the law so that NCLB works better in preparing students for reading and math proficiency by 2014. Duncan said to reporters, “Where things make sense, we’re going to keep them. Where things didn’t make sense, we’re going to change them.” Duncan has been a strong critic of NCLB.
