Video-sharing site YouTube has gained notoriety as a forum where average people can become stars—or at least secure a few minutes of fame through homemade, attention-grabbing videos. But the site is beginning to be valued for more than entertainment; YouTube has also enlisted a following of students eager to get some out-of-class tutoring.
YouTube has thousands of videos on various educational subjects like biology, calculus, and English. Many students are taking advantage of YouTube’s free tutorials when classroom instruction, for whatever reasons, leaves something to be desired.
Technology can be a tremendous aid to students, and taking advantage of YouTube as an educational supplement is a positive thing. However, students should recognize that the benefits of classroom learning cannot be substituted with online videos.
